About census
A lot of data that we will use in the following articles are coming from the 2002 census in Serbia. Census in Serbia have a lot of similarities with census in the other Ex-Yugoslavian countries. Moreover, they are all organized the same year, the last one was in 2002 and the next one is in 2011, this year.
As common characteristics, they all include questions concerning: nationality, mother tongue and religion. The answers for these three questions are optional and up to each citizen. These questions turn each census into an important political event. Indeed, results allow evaluating the size of each community. Moreover, minority rights are based on them. The issue is of a great importance in the places where the differences between communities are weaker. Thus, during the last census in Montenegro, the Serbian and Montenegrian national parties led a massive political campaign on the question of nationality. In Vojvodina, the Croatian and Bunjevac community are also particularly impacted.
